Cultural notes
Tattoo tipping is a relatively new norm in Australia. In Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane studios, especially those with internationally-known artists, 10–20% is increasingly expected for custom work. Outside the major cities and at older walk-in shops, no tip is still normal. Cash is preferred — most artists are sub-contractors paid a chair-rent split, so cash goes directly to them. For multi-session pieces, you can tip on each session or as a lump at the final session.
Common mistakes
Tipping nothing on a A$2,000 custom sleeve in a high-end studio is increasingly seen as cheap.
