Cultural notes
Bellhops at Thai hotels almost universally expect a small cash tip when carrying bags. ฿20 per bag at mid-range hotels, ฿50 per bag at 4- and 5-star resorts, more for heavy bags up stairs or to remote villas. Have small notes ready on arrival; trying to break a ฿1,000 note at the front desk after the porter has left is awkward. Note that the 10% service charge on your hotel bill does not include the porter — that is a separate cash gratuity.
Common mistakes
Tipping with ฿1 or ฿2 satang coins — outdated advice; today's floor is ฿20.
Frequently asked questions
Both arrival and departure?
Yes — tip each time the porter handles bags.
For a villa at Soneva or Six Senses?
฿50–100 per bag given the long-distance buggy rides and remote locations.
