Cultural notes
At a Kneipe (pub) or Bar in Germany, round each drink up by 50 cents to €1 — a €3.50 beer becomes €4. If you run a tab, 5–10% at the end is normal, said verbally as you pay. Regulars often round more generously; tourists need not. Cologne and Düsseldorf Brauhäuser have their own conventions where the Köbes (waiter) keeps tally with marks on the coaster.
